Free Content Dynamic modeling of road traffic noise around buildings in an urban area

The development and implementation of a model for dynamic modeling of road traf?c noise around building are presented. Its purpose is to quantitatively analyze current noise pollution and support policy making on noise abatement in an urban area. This model comprises microscopic traf?c simulation and 2.5D road traf?c noise calculation. The ?rst part provides the original source of time-variant traf?c data in an urban area where many complex roads and restrictions exist. The second part integrates a vehicle emission model with noise propagation model. Beam tracing method is used to accurately and ef?ciently simulate noise propagation in an urban environment where multiple re?ections and diffractions occur among complex buildings. This model can be applied to calculate spatial and temporal road traf?c noise around building in urban areas, and assess noise abatement policies in detail. Case study of a typical urban area recommends that accounting for 300-500 m distance, 3-5re?ected times and 1 diffracted time threshold for beam tracing method is accurate and ef?cient enough for the model. Measurements in real life environment show good agreement with modeling results. Noise pollution around Guangzhou Women & Children Medical Care Center in current situation reveals that 5.58% of horizontal and 29.79% of vertical area meet the local standard. Last, four noise abatement policies are evaluated.
