As building design evolves to prioritize occupant comfort, productivity, and well-being, acoustical and vibration control standards have become critical considerations for the design community. This presentation will explore the impact of ANSI S12.60, ASHRAE 189.1, and LEED IEQ 9.0 on commercial building projects, with a focus on the integration of HVAC systems and mechanical equipment. We will discuss how these standards define acceptable background noise levels, noise criteria (NC) ratings, and vibration control measures to mitigate sound transmission and structure-borne noise in commercial environments. Special attention will be given to HVAC noise pathways, including casing radiated noise, in-duct breakout noise, and structure-borne transmission, and how engineers can address these challenges through design strategies, material selection, and isolation techniques. Additionally, we will examine how ASHRAE 189.1 encourages sustainable acoustical practices in high-performance buildings and how compliance with LEED IEQ 9.0 can contribute to improved indoor environmental quality (IEQ). This session aims to provide designers and engineers with practical insights on achieving optimal acoustical environments while ensuring compliance with evolving building codes and sustainability frameworks.
