A comparison of sound barrier effectiveness when using ISO 9613-2:1996 vs. ISO 9613-2:2024
The Internation Standard ISO 9613-2 method for attenuation of sound during propagation outdoors part 2 was revised in 2024. The previous version was in use for twenty-eight years beginning in 1996. Changes implemented in the 2024 revision result in significant reductions to calculated
effectiveness of sound barriers. Typical ground level sound sources associated with energy projects were modeled using CadnaA for a variety of cases to compare the effectiveness of sound barriers using the 1996 and 2024 versions of ISO 9613-2. Sound barrier heights necessary to achieve compliance
with a regulatory standard were compared. In some cases, the changes to this standard can be the difference between a buildable project and one that cannot be mitigated in a cost-effective manner.

The Noise-Con conference proceedings are sponsored by INCE/USA and the Inter-Noise proceedings by I-INCE. NOVEM (Noise and Vibration Emerging Methods) conference proceedings are included. All NoiseCon Proceedings one year or older are free to download. InterNoise proceedings from outside the USA older than 10 years are free to download. Others are free to INCE/USA members and member societies of I-INCE.
