
Using hard disk drive surrogates
HDD surrogates measure disturbances which can degrade hard disk drive (HDD) performance. Two surrogate designs were developed and made available by the Storage HDD Dynamics Working Group under the Open Compute Project (OCP). The Phase 1 surrogate has two microphones to measure acoustic
disturbances below 20000 Hz. The Phase 2 surrogate additionally has 6 accelerometers to also measure vibration disturbances below 3000 Hz. The Phase 1 and 2 surrogates and the OCP working group that developed them are described. The benefits of using the OCP Phase 2 HDD Surrogate for design
integration of fan and HDD components into a host computer are presented, including strategies for mitigating vibroacoustic disturbances. Methods of using the HDD Surrogate for fan and HDD component qualification and for disturbance identification are described.
