
Building a new aero-acoustic lab: when construction becomes a research project
This paper will discuss the process of building a new aero-acoustic test facility. The space supports leading HVAC noise control research, and construction of the new laboratory provided an opportunity to learn from the process. Investigations that were done during development will
be covered. With specialized research goals, the laboratory was optimized for specific test requirements, with versatility as a significant secondary design consideration; the reverberation room and other peripheral supporting structures required adherence to multiple laboratory test standards
while remaining flexible. Driving requirements are discussed, in addition to pain points and lessons learned while navigating construction. Designing for airflow alongside acoustic performance is also covered. Finally, comparisons will be made between expected and qualified performance of
the new laboratory.
