An essential component of teaching civil engineering is hands-on laboratory experience. However, beyond the intermittent noise from heavy machinery, residual background noise such as ventilation systems, distant equipment, and continuous mechanical hum persists throughout laboratory sessions. This study investigates how sustained background noise in the Civil Engineering laboratories at Morgan State University impacts students' cognitive abilities, learning curves, and overall academic engagement. Given the documented negative effects of prolonged noise exposure, such as reduced comprehension, cognitive fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, this research aims to determine whether background noise subtly but significantly affects student learning outcomes. The study employs a quantitative approach, integrating noise measurements with student performance assessments. laboratory sessions will be observed in environments characterized by residual background noise. Noise levels, including sustained and frequency-specific measurements, will be recorded using an IEC 61672-compliant device using the NIOSH Sound Level Meter Application. Students will complete structured self-assessment questionnaires, submit laboratory reports, and participate in pre-lab and post-lab evaluations to gauge the cognitive impact of persistent noise exposure. Assessments will explore experiences related to concentration challenges, mental exhaustion, and academic performance. Statistical analysis will determine whether correlations exist between residual background noise levels and changes in student engagement and learning outcomes.
