
Re-considering the impedance method used to predict impact sound insulation from heavy impacts
In Japan, the "impedance method" is commonly used to predict the Fast time-weighted maximum sound pressure level in a receiving room due to a heavy impact in accordance with the measurement procedure of JIS A 1418-2:2000, (updated to JIS A 1418-2:2019). The original purpose
of the model was to allow designers to estimate the impact sound insulation performance of a heavyweight floor structure at the design stage to reduce the floor impact sound levels. Although the impedance method and related papers report agreement with measurements, the method lacks a formal
derivation. This paper investigates the origins of the impedance model and compares it with two models derived from SEA for a plate, and a mass-spring-dashpot system representing the fundamental bending mode of the floor.
