Tire Pavement Noise Levels of Chip Seal Pavements
On Board Sound Intensity (OBSI) measurements were conducted on Chip Seal pavements of interest in and around Bishop, California in Caltrans District 9. Measurements were made in accordance with AASHTO T 360-16, Standard Method of Test for Measurement of Tire/Pavement Noise Using the
On-Board Sound Intensity (OBSI) Method. A total of 20 pavement sections were tested, including fourteen (14) Chip Seal, four (4) dense-graded asphalt, a gap-graded asphalt, and a rubber chip pavement. This paper discusses the results of the measurements and compares the Caltrans District 9
pavements to other Chip Seal pavements previously measured throughout the US.
