Free Content Effectiveness of Noise Abatement Measures by using Restriction of Reverse Thrust and Noise Embankment on the Side of Runway

At the side area of the runway around an airport, it can be heard various aircraft noise such as takeoff roll or thrust reverser after landing quite frequently. Thus, it is also important to take noise abatement measures against aircraft noise on the sidelines of runway. One of countermeasures is to impose restrictions on the use of reverse thrust after landing. Narita airport is examining the effectiveness of reverse thrust restriction as further noise countermeasures for the enhancement of airport function. As a precedent sample in Japan, Osaka International Airport (Itami) impose restriction the use of reverse thrust is limited to idle at the time-period after 7 pm. Further, embankment that combines for park facilities has been fulfilled for sound-proofing in the side of the runway at Itami airport. A short-term noise measurement was carried out the area on the side of runway including the embankment and residential area to verify the effectiveness of the noise abatement measures. This report describes the analysis results of examination for effectiveness of noise countermeasures using the data from not only the short-term noise measurement, but also long-term noise monitoring installed at the airport boundary.
