Free Content Glossary of terms used in noise control engineering

Download Article:
This document defines terms which are commonly used in noise control engineering. Most of the definitions are taken without significant modification from ANSI S1.1-1994, American National Standard ACOUSTICAL TERMINOLOGY, published by the Standards Secretariat, Acoustical Society of America, 120 Wall Street, 32nd Floor, New York, New York 10005-3993, USA. The Acoustical Society of America holds the copyright on ANSI S1.1-1994. Terms in this document which are excerpted from ANSI S1.1-1994 are reproduced with permission. In those areas of noise control engineering where ANSI S 1.1-1994 is incomplete, additional definitions have been introduced from other sources. These additional definitions are identified with superscripts. Superscript 1 is ISO 2041, superscripts 2 and 3 are the NNI staff, superscript 4 is ANSI Y10, and superscript 5 is ISO-DIS 12001. The terms from ANSI S1.1-1994 have been reordered, so that each term makes use of definitions that have appeared earlier in the glossary, whenever possible. Some of the ANSI S 1.1-1994 definitions have been simplified by incorporating notes into the main definitions, and with minor editing of the sentence structure. The glossary is presented in nine sections: (1) General, (2) Periodic Quantities, (3) Waves, (4) Spectrum, (5) Pressure, Velocity, Energy and Power, (6) Levels, (7) Instruments and Devices, (8) Noise, and (9) Building Acoustics.
