Experiments on sound propagation in forests

Sound propagation in forests poses challenges due to complex factors like ground effects and tree reflections. Limited data on forest sound propagation and bark impedance limit the development of accurate acoustic models. This research addresses this issue by characterizing bark absorption through laboratory measurements and by studying in-situ sound propagation in a well-documented forest. Objectives include understanding the acoustic behaviours of forest soils and barks, exploring the relevance of existing impedance models, and characterizing sound propagation in wooded areas. The methodology is based on Kundt's tube measurements for bark absorption and on a defined protocol for forest sound propagation, including in-situ soil impedance measurements. Results will finally enrich reference databases dedicated to, eco-acoustic and soundscape research and will more generally contribute to a better comprehension of sound propagation in forests.
