The Dutch Building decree gives rules for the ventilation and sound insulation of facades. In the standards a lot of possibilities are described to fulfil these requirements. In this paper the most frequently used methods are described. It also became clear that in the course of the last 40 years some methods for natural ventilation are not in use any more for newbuilt dwellings because of problems with insect-nuisance and housebreaking. Therefore special ventilation grids and muffles are in use to fulfil the requirements both for ventilation and sound insulation of facades. In that case open windows play no role in case of ventilation but only when people want to get fresh air in a short time by opening windows on both sides of the dwelling.
