Investigation of methods to estimate NLR of residential structures for airport sound insulation programs

This paper investigates methods to estimate outdoor-to-indoor noise level reduction (NLR) for single family residential structures before and after the installation of sound insulation treatments to improve the structure's NLR. Acoustical modeling results and Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) ratings are evaluated in the context of treatment design for airport sound insulation programs and assessment of soundproofing product performance. Overall, post-construction NLR predictions are observed to have a high degree of accuracy when the results are generated using a combination of pre-construction measurement data and acoustical modeling techniques. The composite OITC rating of the noise exposed building façade is also shown to be an effective metric for predicting NLR values.
