Integrating Point-of-View Video into Hearing Conservation Programs for Improved Outcomes
Noise overexposure has been pervasive in the mining industry since occupational exposures were first tracked. Various studies and surveillance initiatives indicate a higher prevalence of hearing loss as well as noise overexposure of workers in the mining industry than workers in other
heavy industries. Due to the continued noise overexposure experienced by miners, and their subsequent occupational hearing loss, hearing conservation programs (HCPs) have become a requirement across the mining industry. HCPs are required by federal and state agencies when workers have noise
exposures exceeding the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) or Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) action levels. Despite regulations and best efforts of employers, occupational hearing loss continues to be prevalent across mining operations. This paper investigates
the potential use of point-of-view video as a component of hearing conservation programs in mining. Examples of point-of-view video collected simultaneously with noise dosimetry and the subsequent recommendations will be provided. Using point-of-view video as an integral component of a hearing
conservation program can provide real-life examples and relevant scenarios to workers, and in turn reduce cases of noise over-exposure and occupational hearing loss.
