The transfer function of the secondary path affects the noise reduction performance of an Active Noise Control (ANC) system in a duct. In this paper, an analytical model is developed based on the modal superposition method to calculate the transfer function of the secondary path in a duct with an open end first, and then numerical simulations are conducted to verify the proposed analytical model. The effects of the high-order sound propagation of the secondary source in the duct and the radiation impedance at the duct end are investigated based on a single channel ANC system. The variation of the transfer function with the locations of secondary source and the error microphone is discussed when the error microphone is placed close to the secondary source for system compactness. It is shown that an effective noise reduction can be achieved at specific frequencies by choosing the location of the error microphone carefully.
