A laboratory investigation into the oppressive or vibratory feeling to low-frequency pure-tone

The feeling of oppressive or vibratory due to low-frequency sound are widely known as a sensation unique to low-frequency sound. The previous study conducted about 40 years ago showed the frequency characteristics of sound pressure levels that induced oppressive or vibratory feeling, finding that these feelings tended to occur prior to others. Also, in 2019, we reported results of an experiment using a similar method and stimuli with the previous study. In both previous studies, one-third octave band noise was used as stimuli, and it was suggested that level fluctuation of one-third octave band noise affected on the feeling of oppressive or vibratory. In the present study, an experiment was conducted using a method similar to the previous studies, and the frequency characteristics of sound that induced oppressive or vibratory feeling were investigated by using low-frequency pure-tone as stimuli. The results suggested that sound pressure levels where these feelings tend to occur were slightly higher than those shown in the previous studies conducted using one-third octave band noise.
