Free Content Challenges for Noise Relevant Urban Development - The Case of Hamburg Stelling

The urban population increase worldwide places city authorities in a challenging situation as they have to ensure both healthy and affordable living conditions for their citizens. Due to high real estate prices, municipal authorities in some cities turn towards redevelopment and adaptation for housing of areas in proximity to noise sources. This paper presents my team's contest bid project of housing development in a noise polluted urban area in Hamburg - Stelling. In it, I analyze and explain the parameters of the construction plan, the requirements set forth by the public discussion, the investor's vision of the property's development. The project design pinpoints and includes precepts of local, national and supranational policies and ideas for the smart and noise relevant urban development. It's compared to other newly built housing blocks in noise difficult areas and outlines general concepts and interpretations opportunities of important principles. This paper offers a possible solution to the new residential housing development at Hamburg Stelling. It discusses the options of building development in proximity to noise sources from both urbanistic and architectural perspective. It offers composition, floor plans and façes principles that can be used by further housing projects in noise difficult areas.
