Centrifugal Chiller Noise Sources and Mitigation
Noise from centrifugal chillers can often be a key driver in the selection process for large equipment. This paper presents the sound standards applicable for chiller sound measurement, AHRI 575 and AHRI 1280. An overview of significant chiller noise sources and noise generation mechanisms,
including compressors, motors and variable speed drives is presented. In addition, the propagation of fluid borne and structure borne noise is discussed. Techniques for modeling chiller noise are discussed, including statistical energy analysis methods. Lastly, methods for controlling chiller
noise and their effectiveness are discussed.
