Free Content Source Flow Ripple and Source Impedance Measurement for Different Hydraulic Pumps

Pressure pulsations generated by hydraulic pumps can be a major source of noise in the off-high way machinery utilizing hydraulic systems. Hydraulic pump pressure pulsation strength can be represented by a combination of source flow ripple and source impedance. To design the hydraulic system for low fluid-borne noise, both source flow ripple and source impedance amplitude/phase need to be characterized. In this paper, Two pressure/two system method based on ISO 10767-1: 2015 was applied to measure source flow ripple and source impedance with a modified two system method. The modified setup replaces the recommended pipe combination in ISO 10767-1:2015 with attenuator and long absorptive hose combination. Measured pump source impedance was compared to the simulated source impedance based on distributed pump parameter model. Measured source flow ripple can be used to compare and rank potential fluid-borne noise among pumps from different suppliers during the early design phase. A case study of source flow ripple comparison among three pumps from different suppliers is presented.
