
Experimental studies of a sonic crystal window prototype
A sonic crystal (SC) window was designed to replace the conventional louver window in a student hostel in National University of Singapore (NUS) in order to achieve good balancing of noise mitigation, daylighting and natural ventilation. The noise level inside the room at level four
was measured using sound quality head and torso simulator where white, pink and construction noises were played by a loudspeaker on the ground ?oor. The SC window was designed such that it can mitigate the noise at frequency range of tra?c noise. The SC window was able to attenuate extra 2.6
dBA and 6.0 dBA of white noise at full frequency range and frequencies ranging from 700 Hz to 1400 Hz, respectively. The overall amounts of pink and construction noises attenuated by the SC window were slightly lower and slightly higher than that of white noise, respectively, from 700 Hz to
1400 Hz. Generally, the overall amounts of all noises attenuated by left ear were lower than that of right ear. This might be due to the noise reflection from the wall where left ear was located nearer to the wall.
