In this paper, a variable acoustic system proposal which provides a flexible adaptation range for different functions or audience sizes is investigated. In order to achieve the aimed variable acoustic system, perforated panel systems' sound absorption capabilities are examined. Changes in perforation characteristics; hole shape, diameter, central distance and perforation ratio, studied with physical models throughout the research. The physical model is controlled by digital interface which is designed by Processing software sending commands to Arduino board (Uno). Prototype of variable perforated panel system is driven by servo engines linked to an Arduino board. Thus, the defined angle on digital interface (Processing) is converted to physical movement. Afterwards, construction possibility of the proposed variable perforated panel system is clarified. Variations in sound absorption coefficients of the resulting perforated panel configurations are tested while the air gap behind and features of porous material remained constant. Required physical alterations in perforation are provided by the prototype as a variable acoustic system proposal. Data obtained from sound absorption variations by the proposed system are presented as a result.
