
Mitigating the Effects of Crossfit Weight Drops with an Inertia Base System
Mitigating Excessive noise and vibration transmitted to remote parts of a building by CrossFit weight drops proves challenging given the methods and product solutions currently available. Floating floors, thick resilient crumb rubber mats, and special stations with "bladders" that deflate
have been proposed, along with several other measures. Most of these measures prove ineffective or are impractical to implement. Practical solutions still rely on mass and stiffness. This paper reports on the application of a concrete inertia base on coil springs designed to reduce the impact
loads on a wood-framed structure. Basic information covering design of the inertia base and spring system shall be provided along with in situ data recorded for a successful implementation in a residential property. Finally, a set of design curves is proposed to assist a designer for practically
applying these concepts in the field.
