Picture Frustration Test on environmental attitudes of the community living around Noi Bai International Airport
Extending transport network for life convenience and preserving and enjoying natural environment are essential and conflicting activities of human. The operation extension after opening a new terminal building of Noi Bai International Airport was followed by changes in noise exposure
environment. A series of socio-acoustic surveys were carried out around the airport and a variety of noise annoyance levels was found among survey sites. To clarify this discrepancy, Picture Frustration (P-F) test was performed to assess attitudes towards airport, aircraft noise, living environment
and awareness of environment protection of the communities around the airport. A total of 321 responses were obtained. The results showed the significant difference in attitudes toward the airport and the natural environment among the residents at different sites. The urban residents showed
more preference to natural environment than those living in rural and mixed area who desired harmony between the nature and life convenience. The residents at rural sites raised more complaints about aircraft noise effects on sleep than those at the other sites. The agricultural and gardening
activities did not affect the attitude to the airport. The evidence of different attitudes obtained by P-F test and questionnaire methods was found.
