In modern industrial developments, the use of efficient simulation models is essential in order to ensure optimal production process while keeping the costs at a minimum. Therefore, powerful and reliable numerical methods must be available. In particular, the finite element method is widely used in various industrial sectors, e.g. automobile, aircraft and shipbuilding engineering. It is the goal of this work to improve the accuracy of finite element models considering the model and parameter uncertainties of underlying structures. These parameters include the material, geometry, boundary conditions and mesh density. An error analysis of simulations and experiment quantifies the assumptions made for building the model and provides operations that are often assumed to be exact. Here, virtual prototyping of simple structures is performed and analytical and numerical solutions are compared with experimental data. The studies reveal the level of modeling details necessary for achieving satisfactory results and limitations in the virtual prototyping to better understand and assess the process.
